So how was everyone’s Christmas (if that’s how you roll)? Ours was pretty awesome, although quite exhausting. But overall, a great couple of days!
Christmas Eve we spent most of the daytime hours at home relaxing. A was in somewhat of a pissy mood for the entire day (which really only ended up getting worse with the busyness of the evening). She took a short midday nap and around 3pm we headed over to my parents house. We had a great time hanging with family, eating, drinking and being merry. Some of the food highlights included Clams Casino, shrimp (a dip and actual shrimp), pickled herring, ham, scalloped potatoes, squash, peas and waaayyy too many desserts.
As I mentioned, A was really not feeling the whole having-a-lot-of-people-around thing. I think her teeth were also bugging her. She filled up quickly on snacks (I went easy on the no snacking rule since it was the holidays) so she didn’t really eat a ton of dinner. Of course she perked up a bit once it came time for dessert and went to town on those!
By the time we left it was well past her bedtime. Considering her mood for the day and the fact that she stayed up late, I’d say she did pretty well. No major meltdowns, so that’s a plus! She fell asleep pretty quickly once she was strapped into her car seat.
Christmas day began with A waking up around 7:30am in a much better mood. We got her some milk and opened our stockings in our bed. A’s stocking had a few books, some cups for the bath and another bath toy that spins and sprays water. She was pretty down with everything in there and was happy to help Macie and J and I with our stockings as well.
Next, we headed downstairs so for A to see what Santa had brought her (and by Santa I mean us and our extended family). As you can see she had quite the toyland in front of her. I think she knew something was up because she was a bit tentative about coming downstairs. But daddy carried her and once she saw what was waiting for her, she was more than happy to go check out her gifts.
While A played, I began getting breakfast going. Shortly after 8am, my parents and my sister and her boyfriend arrived. At this point J and Nicci’s boyfriend Les took over with food preparation. A was pretty excited to have everyone over so early and was running around, laughing and smiling. A few days earlier, my brother inlaw and his girlfriend sent us a sweet care package containing Applewood Smoked Bacon, Biscuit Mix and Blackberry Preserves from the Loveless Cafe, all of which were pretty amazing! In addition to these, we enjoyed scrambled eggs, sausage, fruit and mimosas.
After we were all well fed, we headed into the living room to open some gifts. All of us were pretty spoiled this year, particularly A (and Baby Bubbles got some sweet outfits as well!). She got the sweetest baby doll and all sorts of accessories from my inlaws and a Rapunzel doll which our nephews picked out just for her. She loved them both and went back and forth between being very loving towards them and throwing them around (clearly we need to work with A before Bubbles joins the party!). She was also a huge fan of the crawling crab that my sister got her, the blocks J’s brother got her and was fascinated by the grill my parents got for her. She also really enjoyed her new kitchenette from mommy and daddy.
Shortly after gifts, everyone left. J hacked an Ikea step stool to make a learning tower for A- it still need to be sanded and painted, but we couldn’t resist letting her taking it for a test drive. So she helped while I assembled my salad (which was pretty amazing and I hope to blog that in the future) and then we got A down for a nap.
Once she woke and had lunch, we headed over to my aunt and uncle’s house where we enjoyed a nice relaxing evening. A was spoiled by even more great gifts from her extended family (on a side note, I have no idea where we’re going to put all of this!). We enjoyed more shrimp dip, smoked salmon, veggie lasagna, meatballs and sausage, salad and cookies.
We left around 7:30pm which worked out perfectly because A was definitely getting tired (and so were we- we actually went to bed pretty early!). We had a lovely couple of days and I couldn’t believe what a difference a year makes. While she still didn’t really understand what was going on, she was just thrilled to be a part of everything and really enjoyed ripping into the gifts (for as long as her short attention span would allow). This makes me even more excited for next year, because I think she’ll understand it much more and we’ll have our sweet Bubbles here as well!
How was your holiday?
