Little Miss Bubbles’ nursery is well underway- J has been working super hard and I’m so excited about the direction in which her room is headed. I’ll post an update soon 🙂 But for now I want to show you a super-simple project that we did.
I found the most adorable baskets at Land of Nod- they call it the Fade Up Rattan Floor Basket. I absolutely love it, but I just don’t have room to spend $59 on a basket in our already meager nursery budget. Since I love the ombre effect, I thought I’d try making my own DIY Ombre Basket (and by I, I mean J because he wouldn’t let me near a can of spray paint at this point).
So I made my way to the Christmas Tree Store, where I happened to come across a basket that had a similar look to the one at Land of Nod. Is it a bit lower quality? Absolutely. But it’s not bad at all and the $15 price tag had me at hello. Add to that the few dollars I spent on Masking Tape and this ended up being under $20! You’ll note that I already had two shades of spray paint left over from A’s Alice in Wonderland Birthday Party projects, so that saved me a ton, but even if you bought the spray paint, it would still be much less than what you’ll pay getting it at Land of Nod (sorry, Land of Nod! I love you guys but funds are tight right now!). Here’s how we made this:
- Tape off the top third of your basket with your masking tape so that it’s completely covered.
- Spray paint a good coat of your lighter color on the middle portion of the basket. Allow this to dry overnight.
- Now tape off the middle section (the top should still be taped at this point). Spray a generous coat of the darker color all over the bottom section. Allow this to dry over night.
- Carefully remove all of your tape and Ta-Da! Your basket is ready to go!
So easy, right? I love how it came out- it’s going to be the perfect spot to store some of Bubbles’ and A’s toys. Goodness knows we have enough toys and are constantly accruing more! Give this a shot, it’s pretty simple and packs quite the punch in any room!
What would you store in your DIY Ombre Basket?

June 7, 2019 at 3:11 pm Hi Carmen! It's been a while but I think the colors he used were Design Masters Coral and Rust-oleum specialty fluorescent but it doesn't say the color- it looks to be a hot pink. Good luck!
