Living room changes and a decorating conundrum.

Recently, J decided that he wanted to rearrange our living room. I think he initially had this idea because our large TV stopped working (and it wasn’t even very old- it’s a Vizio, by the way!)  and so we have a bit of a smaller TV downstairs. Since I wasn’t in love with our old lay out, I told him to have at it. So last night he started moving things around.

Here’s what it used to look like (picture the sectional a bit longer with one additional piece in it) :Living Room Changes | The Life JolieAnd here’s what it currently looks like:Living Room Changes | The Life JolieYou’ll note that we once again removed a piece from the sectional which currently resides in our office.I do feel like it opens the room up a bit more and I like that our windows are no longer covered by a couch. The Brown chair is temporary. We recently inherited it and haven’t decided what the plan is for it. We definitely need to get new (and more child-friendly) blinds.IMG_6989I’d also like to moved the photos over the sofa to the blank space on the other wall:Living Room Changes | The Life Jolie Living Room Changes | The Life JolieBut the area that I’m really struggling with in this room is the TV:Living Room Changes | The Life JolieI’m not loving how the media able is fitting there, it just looks odd and kind of squished in there. To be honest, I also don’t really love the media table and side tables anymore. We got them right after we were married, but they’re just not my style. I can’t decide what to do in that area. Ideally, I’d like to mount the TV on the wall and get rid of the media table altogether. I’m not sure if we put a side table or some sort of furniture piece that is a bit taller and not as wide.

So I thought I’d ask the lovely people of the Internet for their expert opinions.

What should we do about this corner of the room? Does this new layout work?

July 24, 2015 at 12:58 pm I love your furniture! Have you ever considered splitting up your sectional, and leaving the long side approximately where it is, (perhaps moving the side table to the other end of that piece.) Then move the short side to where the TV currently is, and the media center under the pictures?? That brown chair could stay about where it is. (I actually kind of like the brown chair!!) TVs are a real challenge to design a room around, but most of us have them, and most of us want them to be easily viewed from where we sit (of course!!) July 24, 2015 at 1:58 pm I wish I could say that I was a decorator extraordinaire but, alas, I am not. I will say that I love how your new room looks and that I like your idea of mounting the tv to the wall somehow. :-) Betsy @ Desserts Required recently posted...DessertQuestNYC part 3 of 3My Profile

July 24, 2015 at 9:32 pm The room looks brighter now that the windows aren't blocked. I agree with you that the media table looks squished in the corner. Maybe you could mount the TV on the wall and add something in the corner to give vertical interest. Nicky recently posted...Traveling to Disney World on a BudgetMy Profile

July 24, 2015 at 9:40 pm Hi Jolie, I personally would not have a TV in my living room. That's the way we've always lived here. Our living room is for people to talk together, play quiet games or read. That said it was also, when the kids were young, a rambunctious place of couch and sheet forts, puppies and kittens, toys and chaos. I suggest you make the TV a special place in your basement. Your living room will be much easier to balance visually as well, since you don't need a media grouping in there. That's my two cents!

July 27, 2015 at 9:36 am Thank you for your thoughts. I too would not be opposed to getting the TV out of there altogether but J seems to like it in there. The problem is that we have a pretty small house. The basement isn't finished and the only other place it would go is our bedroom.

July 24, 2015 at 10:54 pm I wonder if you could mount it on the wall closer to the white cabinets? The room is perfect...the TV just doesn't seem to fit! The Conservative Mommy recently posted...The Liebster Award- New RecipientsMy Profile

July 27, 2015 at 9:34 am Thank you- I agree and J seems adamant on keeping the TV down there. I don't really need the TV there. I'm not sure I care enough to try and get the TV out of there but I would like to find a logical place for it.

July 24, 2015 at 11:36 pm My personal opinion about the TV. If you can I would mount it on the wall. Thus making the unit underneath obsolete. Or you can get a new media centre (thrift stores are great for this)...If you do though, I would consider something a bit taller maybe. I am most certainly NOT a design expert at all. LOL ...But I hope it helps..maybe. LizZ H. recently posted...Grow your GroceriesMy Profile

July 25, 2015 at 9:49 am We're getting ready to move out of the barn we've been living in for the last two years while we've been building our house and I am going through a lot of these questions in my mind too. Where on earth to put everything and make sure it's organized and efficient from day 1. Good luck! July 25, 2015 at 3:04 pm Hi Jolie! I love rearranging the furniture in our spaces. It helps make old things feel new! I was going to suggest putting the tv in the white cabinets that you have against the far wall - kind of like a media cabinet that you can pull out when you need it. Or being able to put it on the shelf in the white cabinets (if the shelves are removable. Good luck! July 25, 2015 at 11:31 pm You really do have a funky space with the windows right in the middle of the wall! I would say try a smaller console table or maybe a trunk. Something that isn't going to scream LOOOK AT ME I'M A WEIRD SPOT FOR A TV. Haha... you could even DIY a two way mirror over the tv so it doesn't look like a TV... just a cute little corner of the room. July 27, 2015 at 9:29 am It's a totally odd space but I'm having a hard time covering those beautiful windows. We definitely limited our options when we added the built ins but I love them and we needed the extra storage.

July 27, 2015 at 11:54 am It feels like a fresh start when you rearrange a room! The light really shines through with your new layout. We have out TV mounted on the wall because or space is so small. It works but limits the arrangement a bit.
