Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 3/4 cup shortening
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup unsulfured molasses
  • 2 Tablespoons granulated sugar
  • Water

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together all dry ingredients. Set aside.

  2. In a mixer or large bowl, mix shortening, brown sugar, egg and molasses until well combined.

  3. Add dry ingredients and mix until combined. Chill for at least 30 minutes.

  4. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees and line a pan with parchment or a silicone liner.

  5. Roll dough into 1 1/4 inch balls and dip the top of the ball into the sugar.

  6. Place dough balls onto the pan, sugar side up about 3 inches apart.

  7. Dip your fingers in the water and and sprinkle a couple drops onto each dough ball (don't skip this step!).

  8. Bake for 10-12 minutes (you want them set but not hard). Cool and serve.
