Why You've Got To Try This Philly Cheesesteak Pasta

Ugh, I hate doing dishes. So naturally, I'm making a point to create more one pot or one pan meals. And if my family loves them, I'll sharing them in hopes that you and your family will too! As you've probably figured out, this Philly Steak Pasta made the cut with flying colors!

Tender slices of beef, sweet bell peppers, sliced mushrooms and onions sautéed together and mixed with a savory, creamy sauce, penne pasta and plenty of cheese. So if a Philly Cheese Steak and pasta had a baby this would be it! And what a beautiful baby it is! Here's why I love this:

    • One pot = minimal dishes
    • Easy to prep ingredients ahead of time
    • Ready in less than 40 minutes
    • Easy to make
    • Kid-friendly
    • Creamy and full of flavor

    Ingredient Information And Substitutions

    • Beef- I like to buy shaved beef from the grocery store to save time. If that's not available, you can grab a sirloin steak and slice it as thinly as possible Slicing tip: pop it into the freezer for 30 minutes prior to slicing to make it easier to get thin, clean slices.
    • Pasta- Penne pasta is my shape of choice for this, but any similar size and shape pasta works here.
    • Cheese- I know many purists believe American cheese is the only way to go for a Philly Cheesesteak, but I prefer mozzarella for this. You can also sub in Provolone or Monterey Jack.
    • Vegetables- Bell pepper, onion and mushrooms add excellent flavor and texture. Any color bell pepper will work.
    • Seasonings- Kosher salt, black pepper and garlic powder add a delicious kick of flavor.
    • Sauce- The ingredients that bring together this killer, creamy sauce include beef broth, Worcestershire Sauce, heavy cream and corn starch. You can easily substitute half and half for the cream.

How To Make Philly Cheese Steak Pasta

    Step 1: Cook the veggies

Heat oil over medium-high heat and sauté the onions, peppers and mushrooms to soften.

Onions, peppers and mushrooms in a skillet being sautéed.

    Step 2: Add beef

Add the shaved beef to the pan and begin browning it. Season with salt, pepper and garlic powder.

Meat added to the vegetables in the sauté pan cooking.

Step 3: Make sauce and add pasta

Whisk together broth, cream, Worcestershire sauce, and corn starch and pour into the pan along with the pasta. Bring to a boil.

Sauce and pasta added to the sauté pan of meat and veggies.

    Step 4: Cover and cook

Once boiling, reduce the heat to medium and cover. Simmer covered for 15 minutes, stirring periodically to prevent sticking.

    Step 5: Add cheese

Stir in ½ cup cheese and top with remaining cheese. Cover and simmer 2-3 more minutes to melt cheese on top and serve immediately.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Philly cheesesteak made of?

Traditionally, a Philly cheesesteak consists of thinly sliced/shaved steak, melty cheese and a hoagie roll (and sometimes onions).

What cut is best for Philly steak meat?

If your store offers shaved steak, grab that to reduce hands-on work. Otherwise I like to use sirloin steak or even top round.

How to cut steak for Philly Cheesesteak?

If you have to cut it, follow these steps:
    1. Place steak into the freezer for 30 minutes
    2. Using a very sharp knife slice as thinly as possible, against the grain- try to cut in one swift motion.

A wooden spoon holing a scoop of Philly steaks pasta with melty cheese all over it.

Tips For Making Authentic Philly Cheesesteak Pasta:

    • Soften the veggies- By cooking for a few minutes at the beginning.
    • When you add the sauce, the beef won't be fully cooked yet- That's ok! It will fully cook as the pasta cooks and add flavor to the sauce.
    • Use the size right pan. I like a nice deep skillet or braiser.
    • Hand-shred the cheese- if possible. It melts easier.
    • Stir often- Especially once it's covered and simmering. This prevents the pasta from sticking to the bottom of the pan.
    • Ingredients you can prep ahead- Slice mushrooms, peppers, onions and beef. You can also shred the mozzarella.
    • Leftovers and storage- This will last up to 3 days covered in the refrigerator. You can reheat individual portions in the microwave. Or you can reheat in a pan over medium heat-add a splash of milk to help loosen it up and make it creamy.

Thoroughly enjoyed this meal. Definitely a family favorite and can be prepared rather quickly. I will be looking at spices to experiment with next time I’m making this to see if I can flavorize it a bit more!

Very tasty. Nice to find an easy and good one pot diner. I did make a few modifications that I believe helped the dish taste better. I used 1/2 of the salt and no salt added beef broth…otherwise I used the ingredients as shown. I modified the process to Sear the steak (ribeye) slices and remove and cover. Sear the onion, pepper and mushrooms until deep sauté ..about 8 - 10 minutes then remove and cover to keep warm Return the meat and veggies in between step 7 and 8 Great dish, we will make it again!

What a wonderfully simple and delicious recipe. I removed cooked meat and veggies to a plate and added liquids and starch like a gravy then added meat mixture and al dente pasta. Also added some cream cheese. Thanks for this recipe.

I have this on the stove now. Tweaked to my liking for red and yellow peppers. I had to make some heavy cream with milk and butter. I added some Mrs Dash no salt steak seasoning, about a tablespoon and extra garlic powder. We love a little kick. It looks and smells amazing. Maybe I can add a pic of it simmering on Pinterest. My son is on a low sodium diet so for the cheese, I'm using a shredded Swiss and gruyere mixture, it's the lowest sodium outside of straight Swiss.

Delightfully tasty quick and easy dinner! I used some small deer roast portions that I sliced really thin but added about an extra half cup of broth because I think my my noodles weren't submerged enough for my liking lol and I used monteray jack cheese and a little Parmesan since thats what I had.
