Ingredient Information And Substitutions
- Crescent Roll Sheet- Definitely the easiest option! You could also use regular crescent rolls — simply use a rolling pin to roll them out, then shape into a rectangle.
- Pizza Sauce- You can opt for store-bought to make pizza with bread dough if you're short on time, or try my easy pizza sauce recipe instead. It's my favorite alternative to jarred sauce and is ready in about 1 hour.
- Mozzarella Cheese- I can't say enough good things about shredding the cheese yourself. It melts easy. But pre-shredded works fine as well.
- Pepperoni- In our house, it wouldn't be bread pizza without some pepperoni! Feel free to sub with ham, or omit the meat completely to make it vegetarian-friendly.
- Butter, Italian Seasoning, Romano Cheese- The herby, cheesy topping. It adds extra flavor and helps the crescent dough become golden brown as it bakes in the oven — don't skip it! You could also use Parmesan cheese.

How To Make Rolled Pizza With Bread Dough
Step 1- Recipe prep.
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Arrange the crescent sheet on top and roll it slightly to flatten.
Cut the dough into strips about 1.5 inches into each side, making sure to leave about 3-4 inches of uncut dough in the center. Spoon the sauce onto the center of the dough and spread evenly.

Step 2- Add the fillings and braid the dough.
Top the middle with mozzarella and pepperoni.
Fold the dough strips over each other toward the center, pressing lightly in the middle to create the braid. Fold the ends in so the filling doesn't leak out when baked.

Step 3- Add butter topping and bake.
Add the melted butter, Italian seasoning, and Romano cheese to a small bowl and mix until well combined. Brush on top of the braided dough.
Bake the crescent roll pizza for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown. Enjoy!

Frequently Asked Questions
It's not exactly the same thing as pizza dough, but it's a great substitute! Crescent dough is lighter, flakier, and has a slight buttery flavor.
I prefer mozzarella cheese for its mild flavor and great melt-ability! But you totally switch it up if you prefer. Provolone or fontina are some options.
While I enjoy bread pizza with cheese and pepperoni, any other of your favorite pizza toppings will work. Cooked sausage, peppers, onions, olives, mushrooms — even pineapple bits (I said what I said!) would be tasty.
Shoot for about 30-35 minutes or until golden brown. I usually start checking for doneness around the 30-minute mark to prevent burning.
You technically can... but in that case, I encourage you to assemble it ahead of time and then bake it just before serving. You'll get the best flavor and texture.
I prefer pizza roll bread warm, but it's also tasty at room temperature.

Tips For Making A Crescent Pizza Roll
- Using crescent rolls if a sheet isn't available- Remember, if a crescent roll sheet isn't available you can totally use crescent rolls! Carefully unroll the dough, leaving it in a rectangle. Use a rolling pin to smooth out the perforations and make it one sheet. Make sure to be extra careful when braiding the dough.
- Don't forget the parchment paper for easier cleanup and to prevent sticking.
- I use a pizza wheel or a knife to cut the dough strips. The sharper the better, but be careful!
- I use the back of my spoon to spread the pizza sauce evenly down the center of the dough. A spatula would also work!
- Don't cut the baking time short. You want to make sure all the dough is baked through!
- I like to serve this with extra marinara sauce for dipping. Or, copy your favorite pizza joint and pair it with some blue cheese or ranch dressing.
- Ingredients to prep ahead- Shred cheese and make the pizza sauce to save on assembly time.
- Leftovers and storage- Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. I personally love cold rolled pizza bread, or you could reheat it in an air fryer or toaster oven at 350 degrees F for 5-10 minutes until crispy.
