Why You'll Love A Hot Dog And Fries Skillet
I don't know about you, but when I was a kid, I was alllllll about those easy, throw-together dishes everyone's mom would make. But the best one, by far was hot dogs and potatoes! Most kids love a good hot dog. And mixing them with crispy fried potatoes felt like French fries you could eat with a fork. Dip it in some ketchup and you've got yourself a winner!
So I knew I wanted to bring this back to the blog one day, and here we are — I had to teach you all how to cook hot dogs on the stove just like my mom did. This is so quick and easy to throw together and a great way to use leftovers as well. This is a family dinner that weeknight wins are made of! And in case you need even more reasons to make this for your family tonight:
- Incredibly easy
- The BEST way to make hot dogs
- One skillet dish
- No need to pre-cook the potatoes
- Kid-tested and approved!

Ingredient Information And Substitutions
- Hot Dogs- Slice your dogs before adding them to the skillet! This is key — you want there to be more surface area available to brown up so that each and every bite is nice and crispy.
- Potatoes- This recipe is all about ease, so feel free to use whatever spuds you have on hand.
- Oil & Butter- I like to pan fry hot dogs (and the potatoes) in a mixture of oil and butter, again, for the crispiest, most golden brown results. I usually use canola oil and salted butter, FYI.
- Seasonings- I season everything with garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, kosher salt, and ground black pepper. A simple combination that goes a really long way!

How To Fry Hot Dogs And Potatoes
Step 1- Cook the potatoes.
Melt the butter and oil together in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped potatoes and arrange in a single layer. Season with the onion powder, garlic powder, and paprika, and cook for about 15 minutes.
Stir and turn often, adding the salt and pepper as you go.

Step 2- Place the hot dogs in the frying pan.
Introduce the hot dogs to the pan with the potatoes. Continue cooking for 10-15 more minutes, or until the potatoes are golden brown and the hot dogs are browned. Serve immediately and enjoy!

Frequently Asked Questions
No — most hot dogs come already cooked, so you're really just heating and adding a bit of char.
Sure, just undercook it slightly and add it back into a greased pan to heat and crisp when you're ready to eat.
Hot dogs and potatoes last for 3-4 days covered in the refrigerator.
No — this works well with unpeeled potatoes. I just prefer to peel them because my kids are more likely to eat them that way.
Totally! Just add them at the very end of the cooking time — in the last 5 minutes of frying instead of 10-15 minutes should be fine — so you don't overcook and burn them.
I think chopped bell peppers and onions would taste great! And I always serve this with ketchup. I think the big thing to remember is to watch it and manage your heat so you don't burn anything.

Tips For Making Fried Hot Dogs and Potatoes
- Another reason I like to use a combination of oil and butter is to keep the butter from burning.
- Be sure to cut the potatoes into a uniform size for even cooking.
- Remember to turn the potatoes often so they don't burn.
- I think a big key to this is to get the potatoes nice and crispy before you add the hot dogs. Hot dogs cook faster than potatoes, so you'll want to wait until closer to the end to add them.
- Keep an eye on the stove as these cook. Be sure to manage the heat throughout cooking and reduce if needed.
- Upgrade Idea: Add an extra cheesy layer to your pan fried hot dogs. Sprinkle with your cheese of choice during the last minute of cooking for a gooey and tasty topping.
- Ingredients to prep ahead- You can slice the hot dogs and wash the potatoes ahead of time.
- Leftovers and storage- As mentioned, this dish will keep for about 3-4 days in an airtight container in the fridge. Use your microwave to reheat single servings in 30-second bursts until warmed through. Larger portions can be heated on the stove!
