Why You'll Love Asparagus With Balsamic Vinegar:

By now, you know about my undying love for asparagus. I think it's one of my favorite vegetables! First off, it's healthy. Second, it tastes pretty darn good — especially when grilled!

This recipe for grilled asparagus came to be because one day I just started mixing things in with the veggies before I gave the whole thing to my husband to put on the grill. Did you ever have those days, where you add various things together and randomly create a recipe?

It tasted like pure magic. The flavors melded together so beautifully. This is now my go-to asparagus recipe because it comes together within a matter of minutes with delicious results. I also love that it's:

    • Made with simple ingredients
    • So easy
    • A tasty way to eat more vegetables
    • Impressive enough to serve guests
    • The best way to cook asparagus!

    Ingredient Information And Substitutions

    • Asparagus- Opt for bright green asparagus that are firm to the touch, but not rock hard. Try to avoid any slimy tops as those have gone bad. I prefer a stalk of medium thickness, but any thickness will work as long as you adjust your cooking time.
    • Olive Oil- Not only does this add a touch of light flavor, but it keeps everything from sticking to the grill too much!
    • Balsamic Vinegar- I love how the tangy vinegar tastes with the sweet and earthy veggies. Make sure to use vinegar, not a balsamic glaze.
    • Cheese- Romano or Parmesan taste best with balsamic asparagus, in my opinion!
    • Seasonings- All you need is salt, pepper, and garlic powder.

How To Make Asparagus And Balsamic Vinegar

    Step 1- Prep the grill.

Spray the grill with nonstick cooking spray and heat it to medium.

    Step 2- Prep the asparagus.

Place the asparagus in a large bowl and toss with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Add the cheese, salt, pepper, and garlic powder and toss again to coat evenly.

    Step 3- Grill.

Add the seasoned balsamic vinegar asparagus to the grill and cook for about 10 minutes, or until the vegetables have a nice char. Enjoy!

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make grilled asparagus and balsamic ahead?

This is best served right away as it can get a little squishy in the fridge. Also, I would only leave it in the marinade for 30-40 minutes max.

What's the best way to reheat the asparagus?

I prefer using the oven. And I strongly encourage you to enjoy leftover balsamic vinegar asparagus with a fried egg!

Do you have to wash asparagus before cooking?

Yes, it’s generally a good idea to wash and dry it. You want to remove any debris and double-check that there aren't any slimy stalks.

Can I place balsamic asparagus directly on the grill?

Yes, we always put these directly onto the grill or grill the asparagus in a basket if you'd rather. Some people like grilled asparagus in foil, but I prefer the texture that the flame gives it. I'd also be willing to bet that this recipe is fantastic with other mixed grilled veggies as well!

Should I precook asparagus before grilling?

You don't have to, and I find that blanching them involves an extra step that isn't necessary!

Tips For Making Asparagus and Balsamic Vinegar

    • Be sure to spray the grill with cooking spray before heating to prevent sticking.
    • Toss the asparagus and balsamic well with the other ingredients so that it’s evenly covered.
    • Be sure you keep an eye on the grill and turn frequents. Asparagus burns easily!
    • You don't really need measurements. I added some as a suggestion but I've always just seasoned these to taste, and the results have consistently been excellent.
    • Don't be afraid to get creative with your ingredients. I love the idea of adding honey for some added sweetness, cayenne pepper for a bit of heat, or a squeeze of lemon juice to brighten things up. Experiment with your own flavor combinations!
    • This is best served immediately.
    • Ingredients to prep ahead- You can prep and trim the asparagus ahead of time. Otherwise, this one goes super quickly!
    • Leftovers and storage- Store any leftover balsamic asparagus in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2-3 days.

    • Grilled Lemon Pepper Chicken Drum Sticks
    • Tuna Macaroni Salad

This is such a simple recipe. I love anything grilled. My husband doesn't care for asparagus, but I am going to have to try this to see if it changes his mind.

I bought some asparagus this weekend at the farmer's market and was trying to figure how I wanted to cook it. I've never grilled asparagus, but I bet it is fantastic. I am really forward to giving your recipe a try.
